December durable-goods orders up 3.1% on broad-based gains

Orders for durable goods jumped by 3.1% in December, led by stronger
demand for airplanes and capital equipment, the Commerce Department
reported Friday.

Microsoft stock's up as earnings fall but exceed estimates

Microsoft Corp. shares rose Friday after the company's sales and profit
beat expectations, thanks to sales of its server software and
entertainment products.

Major gauges end mixed Friday as interest rate worries drag Dow lower for a second session. Nasdaq higher on Microsoft earnings.

cautious on rising long-term interest rates in the bond market, while
higher energy prices undercut interest in the technology sector.
