U.S. stocks managed a higher close after a volatile session Thursday,
following a retreat in crude oil prices that offset concern about higher
bond yields, which Wednesday led the Dow Jones Industrial Average to
stumble nearly 150 points.

U.S. stocks were mixed in volatile trading Wednesday, as rising bond
yields kept a lid on the market, offsetting enthusiasm over oil prices
backing away from $69 a barrel, blow-out earnings from Morgan Stanley,
and a $22.5 billion share buy-back from Home Depot Inc.

Morgan Stanley profit jumps 40%, outpacing expectations

Morgan Stanley on Wednesday said its second-quarter profit jumped 40%,
outdoing rivals who reported last week as the firm said debt-trading
revenues rose to their second-highest tally ever and the firm avoided
the extent of subprime losses suffered by competitors.

WASHINGTON
Starts of new homes in the United States fell by 2.1% to a seasonally
adjusted annual pace of 1.47 million in May, as building permits for new
construction rose 3% to 1.50 million on a jump in multifamily dwellings,
the Commerce Department estimated Tuesday.

The outlook for U.S. home building is the worst in 16 years, the
