Crude closes flat on the year; natural gas down 44%

Crude-oil futures crept higher on the final day of the trading year
Friday but finished 2006 with a flat performance, as traders weighed
supplies against milder-than-normal weather in the Eastern U.S.

U.S. stocks were higher on Friday, setting the Dow Jones Industrial
Average on course for an almost 17% gain on the year, with investors
still cheering developments in the Apple Computer Inc. stock-options
inquiry and prospects that Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. is close to a
deal to sell Putnam Investments.
