U.S. stocks fall on Home Depot results, caution on inflation

NEW YORK
U.S. stocks fell Tuesday as investors weighed Wal-Mart's
better-than-expected results against Home Depot's disappointing
earnings, while a tame producer-price report still had investors looking
ahead to consumer-price data they hope will confirm signs of an easing
inflationary trend. .

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. turned in an 11% earnings increase in reporting
third-quarter financial results Tuesday but the world's largest retailer
also lowered slightly its forecast for the full year.

NEW YORK
Home Depot Inc. on Tuesday reported a 3% decline in third-quarter
profit, as sales proved lackluster and the U.S. home-improvement market
"slowed significantly."
