U.S. stocks rise as market takes positive view of election

NEW YORK
U.S. stocks ended higher Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial
Average setting a new record close, after investors concluded that
little market-moving legislation is likely to come out of the new
Democratic party-controlled House of Representatives and a Senate whose
leadership remains uncertain.

the U.S. House of Representatives, President Bush announced that Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld would leave the Pentagon.

WASHINGTON
After receiving what President Bush called a "thumping" in Tuesday's
election, the Republicans in Washington looked to new leaders on
Wednesday to deal with a newly empowered Democratic Party on Capitol
Hill.
