Broad business gains power Merrill Lynch to higher profit

NEW YORK -- Merrill Lynch said Tuesday that third-quarter earnings more
than doubled from year-ago levels as the brokerage giant booked a
one-time net benefit of $1.1 billion from its merger with
asset-management firm BlackRock.
