U.S. stocks rise as merger news offset weak jobs

NEW YORK
U.S. stocks opened higher Friday, as merger news - including a report
that Microsoft Corp. wants to discuss buying Yahoo Inc., and news that
Reuters Group Plc has also been approached by a potential buyer --
overshadowed a weak jobs report.

WASHINGTON
The U.S. economic slowdown finally showed up in the jobs number in
April, with a rising unemployment rate, weak job growth and a falling
number of hours worked.

Yahoo stock sizzles on Microsoft buyout talk

NEW YORK
Shares of Yahoo Inc. surged more than 17% on Friday after reports that
Microsoft may try to buy the Internet-search firm after being beaten to
other deals by Google Inc.

Reuters shares surge on offer said to be from Thomson

LONDON
Shares of Reuters Group on Friday surged after disclosing that a suitor,
reportedly Canada's Thomson Corp., has cooked up a takeover bid worth
over $15 billion, the second time this week there's been a move that
would shake up how business news is delivered around the globe.
