U.S. stocks rise on 'Goldilocks' scenario; Dow at all-time high

NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks gained ground Wednesday, with the Dow Jones
Industrial Average at a new all-time high, as the latest economic
reports suggested solid economic growth with inflation held in check,
but Wal-Mart Stores Inc. fell on a lowered sales outlook.

CHICAGO -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in an unusual slip-up, trimmed an
already-weak September same-store sales forecast Wednesday because of a
calculating error, sending the retailer's shares lower.

Economic Report: Rush to refinance spurs jump in mortgage applications

WASHINGTON -- With homeowners rushing to refinance loans to take
advantage of low interest rates, applications for mortgages at major
U.S. banks surged last week by 11.9%, the Mortgage Bankers Association
reported Wednesday.
