U.S. stocks end higher; Dow logs new record close

NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks ended higher Tuesday, with the Dow Jones
Industrial Average logging a new record close, after the price of oil
slumped to a 14-month low, raising hopes falling energy costs will boost
consumer spending and moderate any slowdown in the economy.

Futures Movers: Crude futures drop 4% to close under $59 a barrel

SAN FRANCISCO -- Crude-oil futures fell almost 4% Tuesday to close
under $59 a barrel Tuesday, pulling the benchmark contract to its lowest
level in more than a year, with pressure coming from swelling U.S.
inventories, a lack of risks to output and doubts that key oil producers
will take formal action to reduce supplies and stem the drop in prices.

GM sales dip; Ford cars pace improvement

SAN FRANCISCO - General Motors Corp. on Tuesday reported a drop in
September U.S. auto sales while rival Ford Motor Co. posted improved
results as both companies saw some buyers wade back into the
highly-profitable pickup and SUV markets.

Retailers' September results should show well

CHICAGO -- The nation's retailers are expected to post strong sales
growth for September thanks to cooler weather, falling gasoline prices
and a burst of late back-to-school shopping.
