U.S. stocks rise as WaMu cash report spurs financials

U.S. stocks open firmly higher on Monday, with a report of a $5 billion
injection into Washington Mutual fueling hopes that ailing financial
firms are on course to restoring their financial health.

Beleaguered thrift Washington Mutual Inc. is in negotiations to receive
a $5 billion cash infusion from private-equity firm TPG and a consortium
of other investors, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
