U.S. stock indexes close week with solid gains

NEW YORK
Stocks ended sharply higher Friday, with the major indexes scoring
weekly gains of more than 2%, after an unexpected rise in new home sales
jump-started thinking that the worst of the subprime mess could be over
and a recession avoided.

Blackstone says proposed law would triple tax bill: report

WASHINGTON
Private-equity giant Blackstone Group LP estimates that proposed
legislation now in the U.S. Senate would increase its tax liabilities by
$525 million, or three times what it pays currently, according to a
published report.

Economic Report: New-home sales rise 2.8% to 870,000 pace in July

WASHINGTON
Sales of new homes increased 2.8% in July to a seasonally adjusted
annual rate of 870,000 as the inventory of homes for sale dropped for a
fourth straight month, the Commerce Department estimated Friday.
