U.S. stocks close down amid subprime, earnings trouble

NEW YORK
U.S. stocks finished lower Wednesday, halting a five-session run that
briefly propelled the Dow Jones Industrial Average above 14,000, as woes
from risky home loans re-emerged and earnings from Intel Corp., Pfizer
Inc., and Yahoo Inc., disappointed investors.

EBay earnings jump despite slowdown in listings

SAN FRANCISCO
EBay Inc. saw its second-quarter earnings surge 50% mostly due to strong
growth in its online payments business that offset a continued slowdown
in the online auction giant's listings.

Services, software lead IBM earnings up almost 12%

SAN FRANCISCO
IBM Corp. on Wednesday reported a second-quarter profit that rose almost
12% from a year ago as the technology and services giant recorded strong
gains in its global services and software business.
