U.S. stocks trade mixed; Pfizer, P&G, Verizon weigh on the Dow

NEW YORK
U.S. stocks traded mixed Tuesday as a pullback in shares of Procter &
Gamble, Pfizer Inc. and Verizon Communications weighed on the Dow Jones
Industrial Average, with investors also sifting through a raft of data,
including a surprise dip in consumer confidence.

U.S. consumer confidence dipped unexpectedly in October on growing
pessimism about the job market and the economy, the Conference Board
said Tuesday.

Procter & Gamble Co., the world's largest consumer-products company,
said Tuesday that first-quarter income rose 33%, helped by strong sales
