U.S. stocks rise, but negative Merck, H-P news temper gains

NEW YORK -- U.S. stocks posted tepid gains Wednesday morning, allowing
the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 to touch new multi-month highs,
although investor optimism over the previous session's breakout was
tempered by unfavorable news from blue chips Merck & Co. Inc. and
Hewlett-Packard Corp.
